'ADAM & VENUS'
Her latest picture series Carmen Brucic photographed at the facilities
of the Josephinum in Vienna. "A historical place which, in a unique manner, illustrates the connection of medicine and
culture, of science and art." (from the catalogue Das Josephinum. 650 Jahre Medizingeschichte) Completed in 1785 by
Emperor Joseph II as a training place for army doctors, the classicist building today houses the substantive medical
collections of the University of Vienna, including surgical instruments, valuable books, and the world-famous anatomical
wax models.
These uniquely complex hybrids of artwork and scientific
demonstration pieces, or teaching materials, were produced in Florence, at the renowned workshops of the Museo di Storia Naturale, usually called La Specola, by a
team of anatomists, sculptors and wax modellers to be used for teaching anatomy in Vienna.
What this job required was the great art of anatomica aesthetica, including
the decision in which posture the respective figure should be depicted. Florence and its artworks provided the perfect prototypes.
Thus, for example, the male models remind us of Michelangelo and his famous Adam. In the case of the Medicean Venus it was the Roman reproduction of a Greek
statue of Aphrodite, the Aphrodite of Knidos, that was exhibited at the Florentine Uffizi at the time.
The artist had the permission to photograph the precious wax models, protected in their original glass cabinets,
and with the images thus gathered put together her exhibition Adam & Venus.
Against the background of the story told in the novel Farabeuf or, The Chronicle of an Instant*
by the Mexican author Salvador Elizondo, about a surgeon and his precision work, she on the one hand attempts to reinterpret the Florentine motif, on the other to bring to
the surface an erotic aspect of surgery.
*SALVADOR ELIZONDO, Farabeuf, o la crónica de un instante, Editorial Joaquín Mortiz, 1965 (Engl. Farabeuf or, The Chronicle of an Instant). The novel, whose main character
is a surgeon, reflects on the experience of pain and of the moment in time, as well as on memory, that tries in vain to go back once more to what happened in the past.
Method: changeable between Photography, Theater and Performance. Theme: The fragility between human affairs. Focused on themes related to desire, emotional relationships, vulnerability and fragility from a confessional and intimate perspective. Therefore she developed several photographic works, theater projects, exhibitions and installations. Her work has been shown in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Slovenia and Mexico.
Born 1972, works and lives in Tyrol and Vienna. Since 2001 Carmen Brucic has been devising artistic-scientific formats to deal with emotional subjects. 'Sehnsuchtszentrifuge' ('The centrifuge of longing'), 'Die liebeskranke Gesellschaft' ('The lovesick society'), 'Symmetrien des Abschieds' ('Symmetries of parting'), 'Über den Mut sich zu öffnen' ('On the courage to open oneself') ... these subjects she elaborates, in the form of a process, with the help of various media. Her oeuvre is characterised by a fruitful combination of photography, visual art, and theatre.
